Everything about this film is top-notch--directing, cinematography, performances, music, editing, writing. They're all absolutely excellent throughout. THE RHYTHM SECTION is exciting, harrowing, somber, and heart-pounding by measure. It's the origin story of an action heroine, but it's also a very close look at a complex woman who has trouble shedding the humane aspects of herself in order to accomplish the things she feels she must do. Lively brings an incredible depth to her character of Stephanie, and we feel Stephanie's emotional pain just as strongly as the physical pain she experiences while learning and executing her new craft. Director Reed Morano shows immense talent in this thoughtful, taut thriller, and I can't wait to see more of her films. I just hope another "Stephanie" thriller is one of them. The movie was shot and composed in a way that lead to a more realistic arc. A down and out addict who decides to get revenge on international terrorists for downing her parents flight. Because they decided to make the female character more believable it also led to the problem of yelling at the TV because I was so mad at her for not acting more "brave" or doing things that I was supposing were downright obvious to do, but I could easily see how you might chicken out in real life. I think the negative reviews are due to people so conditioned to see action films act in a certain way. This movie is not a "run of the mill cookie cutter" script or direction.
